Senior Accessibility Program Grant

The Senior Access Program provides home accessibility modifications for seniors to extend their ability to live independently. This grant is available to persons over 55 years of age who meet the income qualifications. Grants are made possible by funding through Alaska Housing Finance Corporation/State of Alaska Senior Citizen Housing Development Fund. Up to $12,000 in accessibility improvements such as bathroom modifications, ramps, handrails, or stair lifts can be provided through this grant. Small assisted living homes of five beds or less may be eligible for smaller grants to improve the assisted living home with an eligible senior occupying the property.

What form of assistance does the grant program provide?

Assistance is in the form of a grant to eligible seniors. Grants are made possible by funding through Alaska Housing Finance Corporation/State of Alaska Senior Citizen Housing Development Fund.

What is the maximum grant amount?

Up to $15,000 is available to qualified seniors who own their own homes, or up to $10,000 for seniors who live in rental housing or $7,000 for seniors who live in a small assisted living facility.

What types of property are eligible?

  • The residence must be within the Municipality of Anchorage and must be a 1 – 4 unit dwelling that is used as the principal residence of the senior applicant.
  • A limited number of grants are available to benefit senior residents living in a 5-bed or less, state-licensed, assisted living facility.

What may funds be used for?

  • Bathroom modifications (such as installing a walk-in shower, grab bars, raising toilet height).
  • Installation of additional handrails to stairs or installing a chair lift.
  • Installation of ramps.
  • Other modifications that meet the program’s goals for senior accessibility.

Who can participate in the Senior Housing Accessibility Modification grant program?

  • Seniors 55 years of age or older who have need for accessibility accommodations, as documented by a medical professional, caseworker, or caregiver familiar with the senior’s needs.
  • The property must be within the Municipality of Anchorage and must be the primary residence of the applicant for 2 years after completion of the modification.
  • The applicant must be able to provide evidence of ownership or, if a rental property, must have a lease and the landlord’s consent.
  • Household income must be of no more than 100% of area median, adjusted for household size.
