Monday, July 12, 2010

ANCHORAGE – Senior citizens and persons with disabilities in Alaska will soon be able to find additional affordable housing thanks to housing assistance competitively awarded to non-profit groups by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  NeighborWorks® Anchorage will receive a $4,775,100 award under the HUD Section 202 program to develop 20 units of quality, affordable rental housing for very-low income senior citizens.  NeighborWorks® Anchorage has also been awarded $2,291,100 under the HUD Section 811 program to develop 10 units of quality affordable rental housing for individuals who experience a disability. In addition to the funds awarded for development, both of these projects will have rental assistance contracts which will ensure that the future residents pay no more than 30% of their incomes towards housing costs.   The Section 811 project known as The Roosevelt Apartments will be located in Spenard and the Section 202 project named Connelly Square will located near Alaska Regional Hospital. NeighborWorks® Anchorage plans to break ground on both projects in the spring of 2011 with new residents moving in by the end of 2011.  The HUD Section 202 and Section 811 programs provide interest-free capital advances to produce accessible housing, offer rental assistance, and provide supportive services for the elderly and persons with disabilities.  More than $550 million in Section 202 and 811 grant awards were announced nationally as a result of a competitive process.  NeighborWorks® Anchorage is working with a variety of local community service providers, as well as the Municipality of Anchorage and Alaska Housing Finance Corporation to ensure that Anchorage responds to the housing needs of our citizens.
